What turbo is best for my truck?

Choosing the right turbo depends on your truck and how you use it.

Bigger is NOT always better—most issues come from choosing the wrong size.

5.9L Cummins (1991.5–2002)

Daily / towing: 57/76x60 (250–425 WHP, fast spool)
Daily + performance: ~440 WHP Entry Level hx35 (more power, still streetable)
Max towing: 60/67/12 (~475 WHP, studs recommended on this turbo and ANY larger turbos)
Higher HP: 62/67/14 (~580 WHP, some lag)
High power: HX35-R (~680 WHP, requires 4” downpipe)

5.9L Cummins (2003–2007)

Stock–30% injectors: Entry drop-in (stock spool, better airflow)
30–100% injectors: HE351-R (~700 HP, some lag, studs recommended)
600+ HP: T4 S300 (strong top-end, more lag, not for towing)

6.7L Cummins (2007.5–2018)

Stock / light mods: 07.5–12 drop-in

(no added lag, better airflow, lower EGTs, keeps exhaust brake)
Modified: 07.5-18 63/64 VGT (~700 WHP)
High HP: S300 or 2nd gen swap setups

Bigger turbo = more lag
Towing setups need quicker-spooling turbos
Head studs recommended on higher power builds

Yes, the stock 47RE, 48RE, and 68RFE transmissions have limits. As do the manuals. Over stock horsepower modifications or upgrades should be done.

Essential upgrades include: gauges, upgraded fuel injectors, lift pump, exhaust (4-5 inch), intercooler, head studs (ARP recommended), and custom tuning. For high-horsepower setups, consider fire rings, o-rings, and upgraded valve springs.

Yes and NO. Every driver has different expectations. Having realistic expectations is a key part of answering this question. Many can and have zero problems, others complain about a stock turbo being extremely laggy. Perception and expectations need to be realistic.

Regular oil service intervals are key. This is not a black and white answer on how many miles. Oil analysis is the BEST answer. Otherwise, 4-5,000 miles for normal driving is fine. Racing or extreme duty cycles CAN change this recommendation. Quality oil and filters are also very important. Inspect turbo boots and clamps every oil change. Service your air filter and check to make sure it is not letting debris past. Always let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes before shutdown to cool the turbo. Visually inspect turbo inducer during every oil change.
